Effects of large macropores on soil evaporation in salt marshes

•Laboratory experiments and numerical simulations were conducted to study the effects of macropores on soil evaporation.•Macropores increased evaporation for low-permeability soil with a shallow watertable.•Macropores altered soil saturation conditions.•Vertical water fluxes due to evaporation went through macropores and bypassed the soil matrix.
