•GPM IMERG shows better overall accuracy compared to the other three products.•On average all four products overestimate the observed precipitation.•Products errors increase with increasing terrain complexity.•Satellite-based products show better accuracy than model-based products.•ERA5 shows lower monthly ErrSD and CC but higher wet bias than ERA-Interim.
