•Ballistic impact test of a newly developed armour grade steel.•Quasi-static, high strain rate and elevated temperature experiments for material models parameters determination.•Numerical simulations in LS-DYNA explicit for NIJ Level 3 standards.•Comparison and validation of four different fracture criteria namely modified Johnson-Cook (MJC), Cockcroft-Latham (CL), maximum shear stress (MS) and constant failure strain (CFS) with experimental test.•Back-face deformation of MJC, CL and CFS fracture criteria in close agreement with experiment.
