•NKFEPs significantly contribute to the vegetation carbon storage of China’s forests.•Vegetation carbon density of NKFEP-covered planted forests was 23.49–68.88 Mg ha−1.•Total contribution rate of NKFEP-covered planted forests was 36.29%.•Total C sequestration potential of NKFEP-covered planted forests was 4.22–8.67 Pg.
