•Stalk bending strength gathered in a fairly small set of locations and years is predictive of lodging incidence in a large number of distinct locations and years.•Stalk bending strength is more predictive of stalk lodging incidence than other predictive phenotypes.•Lignin content was negatively associated with stalk lodging incidence.
