•Biomechanical and histological properties of common carotid artery in the elderly are different between genders.•Samples of common carotid artery from ≥80-year-old individuals were harvested during necropsy.•Male specimens presented higher elasticity (failure strain) than female specimens.•The percentage of collagen fiber in intima and media layers of common carotid artery was higher in women than in men.
