Optimised red- and green-fluorescent proteins for live cell imaging in the industrial enzyme-producing fungus Trichoderma reesei.

•We establish a locus adjacent to the SDHB gene for safe integration of genetic constructs in T. reesei.•Codon-optimised monomeric superfolder GFP is the most suitable green-fluorescent protein tag in T. reesei.•Codon-optimised monomeric mCherry is the most suitable red-fluorescent protein tag in T. reesei.•Both codon-optimised fluorescent tags show brightest signal intensity and superior signal-to-noise ratios.
