•In contrast to previous approaches, light propagation is found to be causal in the Fermi problem.•Causality is achieved entirely within the framework of ordinary quantum optics.•The electric field is special.•Consequences of the rotating wave approximation are investigated with regard to causality.•Time evolution is explored through the Magnus expansion and compared to time-dependent perturbation theory.
