•LC–MS/MS method development and validation for 12 target PPCP compounds.•1/X2 was selected as the best suitable weighting model for quantification of analytes.•Evaluation of percent relative error was the most suitable approach for selecting best curve fit model.•10 target analytes were detected in the surface water matrix.
