•Age-15 employment significantly crowds out study time and motivation for schoolwork.•Extra hour work per week at age-15 increases chance that ever smoke or drink by 1%pt.•Extra hour per week by females (males) lowers exam performance by 6.7% (2.5%) of s.d.•Gains to teenage part-time work in adult outcomes offset by reduced education inputs.•Direct effects include raising dropout in males, occupational attainment in females.
