When do firms get ideas from hiring PhDs

•Knowledge transfer through firm patents by new PhDs in Germany is studied.•Topic models are used to measure the similarity of patents and dissertations.•Exploratory patents derive from dissertations dissimilar to prior firm patents.•Patents filed prior to dissertation submission are more exploratory.•Patents did not become less exploratory under university ownership in inventions.
