•Facile preparation of polydopamine modified SiO2 nanoparticles through mussel-inspired chemistry.•The PDA-co-SiO2 NPs could be served as effective fluorescence quencher.•The PDA-co-SiO2 NPs could be used for sensor DNA and Ag+.•This strategy provided a new ruote for fabrication of fluorescent DNA sensors.
