Impact of the pre-illness lipid profile on sepsis mortality

•Multiple studies have demonstrated an association between lipid levels during sepsis and outcomes.•It is unclear if baseline lipid levels contribute to this relationship.•We demonstrated that baseline LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels are important.•This effect is independent of severity of illness.
