•Principal component analysis allowed exploring relevant relationships among traits.•Common genomic regions were obtained for the PCs using wssGBLUP and BayesC analyses.•Novel candidate genes contributed to a better biological understanding of the main PCs.•Genetic selection for more specific breeding goals can be performed based on PCA.
