•A self-control and visual grouting model test system is developed.•The self-control grouting with constant injection rate can be realized by parameter-controlled grout pumping equipment.•Continuous physical field changes generated by grouting in rock masses can be measured.•The feasibility of the use of this model test system to conduct visual grouting test is verified.
