Size-selective characteristics of splash-detached sediments and their responses to related parameters on steep slopes in Chinese loessial region

•Mean weight diameter of splash-detached sediments first increased and then decreased with increasing rainfall intensity.•Mean weight diameter increased logarithmically with increasing slope gradient.•Equation of mean weight diameter with rainfall kinetic energy, depth and velocity of runoff was established for clay loam.
