•The cyclonic burner operates under MILD combustion conditions.•Two canonical configurations in FGM were used to model the system.•Temperature profiles were measured and compared to the simulated ones.•The model agrees with data for high external dilution levels.•Reactivity predictions for some cases are overestimated due to the internal EGR.
