•Steam electrolysis over LSCrF perovskite electrodes is examined by operando methods.•The surface state of LSCrF is directly associated with the electrocatalytic performance.•In steam electrolysis Sr and Cr diffuse on the surface to form a SrCrO4-like oxide.•Formation of surface chromites is beneficial for the steam electrolysis performance.
