•A measure of reasons for accommodating military-related PTSD symptoms is developed.•The most common set of reasons was obligation or preserving the relationship.•The next most common set of reasons was conflict avoidance or helplessness.•The least common reason was a belief that avoidance helped recovery from PTSD.•Accommodating due to conflict avoidance/helplessness was linked with worst outcomes.
