•Recurrences of ESBL-E. coli UTI are caused by the same phylogenetic group and ST131 subclones.•The ST131-O25b fimH30-Rx subclone is linked to a higher frequency of UTI recurrences.•Monitoring ST131-O25b and fimH30-Rx strains could be useful in assessing the risk of a new UTI.
