Family participation in the care of older adult patients admitted to the intensive care unit: A scoping review

•Family members can participate in the physical and non-physical care of older adult patients admitted to ICU.•Family members' participation is influenced by their contextual characteristics, attitudes, and preferences.•Having a positive attitude, getting enough training and building a constructive interaction are the prerequisites for participation.•Participation may improve the health outcomes of patient and family and reduce the burden of the healthcare system.•Understanding of participation's barriers and facilitators helps nurses to promote family participation in ICU care•Future research is recommended to develop interventions to promote family members' participation in ICU care.
