•Tumor specific CD8 + T cells in spleen express a high level of PD-1.•PD-1 expression on splenic tumor-specific CD8 + T cells correlates positively with IFN-γ synthesis.•For tumor-bearing host, PD-1 pathway exerts its inhibitory function on tumor specific CD8 + T cells at tumor site.
