The stressed vascular barrier and coagulation - The impact of key glycocalyx components on in vitro clot formation.

•S1, HA and HS are components of the endothelial glycocalyx (EGX).•Critical disease triggers EGX shedding, which might interfere with coagulation.•All EGX components impaired clot formation and strength separately in-vitro.•HS mimics heparin and is detectable with ROTEM® and standard coagulation tests.•Monitoring of EGX shedding is recommended in the clinical setting.
