•MB-mediated aPDT induced a significant dose-dependent cytotoxic effect on mouse fibroblasts.•The apoptosis mechanisms were related to mitochondrial photodamage.•The cytotoxicity occurred by the activation of Bcl-2 apoptotic genes.
