•Pd nanocubes integrate on the surface of STO nanocubes at [100] orientation.•Lattice-oriented contact at the interface contributes to fluent charge transfer.•An appropriate Schottky barrier is achieved over smaller Pd nanocubes.•Integration of smaller Pd nanocubes gives better photocatalytic activity.
