Managing conflicts between local land use and the protection of the Ethiopian wolf: Residents’ preferences for conservation program design features

•We examine local residents’ preferences for Ethiopian wolf conservation programs.•A scale extended latent class model analyse residents’ choice experiment data.•There is preference heterogeneity for conservation program features among residents.•Park proximity strongly predicts preference class membership and tolerance to wolf.•Residents inside park are sensitive to direct incentive from wolf-related tourism.
