•Simulations with a Diffuse Interface Model of droplets impacting on a heated solid surface with surface roughness.•Wetting properties of the solid surface influences the cooling rate of the solid during droplet impact. Hydrophilic wetting conditions lead to a higher cooling rate.•Surface roughness of the solid surface increases the cooling rate of the solid by enhancing the heat transfer between solid and fluid.
