Reduced data set for multi-target recognition using compressed sensing frame

•Linear-extracting characteristics are obtained for objects of each class by using sparse representation.•A classification process is developed between the sparse matrix and the original image, resulting in a reconstructed image.•Low-contrast images and low-level plankton signals are enhanced after mapping them onto the newly designed vector space.•An adaptive and suitable dictionary-learning algorithm is proposed.
