Low-resolution Facial Expression Recognition: A Filter Learning Perspective

•Low-resolution facial expression is recognized from a filter learning perspective.•A novel image filter based subspace learning (IFSL) method is developed.•Discriminative image filter is learned based on linear discriminant analysis.•IFSL removes the noises while preserving useful information in facial images.•Experiments on facial expression recognition show the superiority of our method.
