•Biotite contains high Nb (up to 504 ppm) and Ta (up to 572 ppm).•Nb and Ta in biotite can be extracted from biotite by alteration.•Alteration-stage Nb-Ta oxides indicate a new potential Nb-Ta mineralization type.
