•Both BLIM and BDIM are developed to quantitatively represent uniform or non-uniform blast loads.•Element superposition method based on FEM is proposed for solving BLIM and BDIM.•Critical stand-off distances based on BLIM and BDIM are verified to distinguish distributions.•Critical stand-off distances give reference for proper distribution application.
