Pig elimination behaviour – a review

•It appears that elimination away from the nest/lying area is innate and not learned.•The elimination area evolves over time, but seems not to be influenced by the sow.•Changes in pen design can change established elimination behaviour.•The ability to adapt to changes may be affected by previous housing experiences.•Pigs’ elimination pattern seems to follow the activity and drinking pattern.
