Solidification-driven Orientation Gradients in Additively Manufactured Stainless Steel

•304L stainless steel manufactured via LENS was characterized in its as-deposited state in 3D using TriBeam tomography.•Misorientation is found to increase along the solidification direction, in excess of 10∘ from the initial growth orientation.•Orientation gradients are linked to chemical segregation occurring during solidification.
