Pragmatic conservation: Discourses of payments for ecosystem services in Colombia

•PES are a contested and dynamic concept.•Discourses about PES affect its design and implementation.•Based on Q-methodology we identify three PES discourses in Colombia.•Discourses are rather supportive of PES and little social opposition is found.•Each discourse is grounded on different assumptions about environmental degradation.
