Characterization of the local wound environment following treatment of chronic leg ulcers with SIS wound matrix.

•An extracellular wound matrix made from porcine collagen (SISWM) is described.•Blood and bandages from 12 patients treated with SISWM were analyzed.•Healing wounds showed significant decreases in levels of matrix-degrading enzymes.•Healing wounds showed significant decreases in levels of inflammatory cytokines.•No measurable serum antibody response to SISWM was observed.
