•The SATAQ-4′s invariance between Black and White women has not been assessed.•The five-factor structure was supported and equivalent in each group.•One factor loading and item threshold on the thin-ideal internalization subscale differed between groups.•Invariance was supported on other four subscales.•Caution should be applied when comparing thin-ideal internalization scores between Black and White women.
