•Escherichia coli CFT073 develops resistance to ampicillin (AMP), ciprofloxacin (CIP) and fosfomycin (FOF) monotherapies.•AMP, CIP and FOF combinations delayed antibiotic resistance emergence in E. coli.•The HFIM system could potentially be used to identify clinically relevant antibiotic combinations.
