•The compete sequence of groundnut rosette assistor virus (GRAV) has been determined.•GRAV has seven predicted open reading frames.•GRAV most closely resembles viruses from the genus Polerovirus.•Two GRAV variants were identified which shared 84.2% nucleotide sequence identity.
