•Adding MnO2, H2O2, or electro-generating H2O2 enhances O3 conversion to •OH.•The EP process performs similarly as catalytic ozonation and O3/H2O2 for EC removal.•Catalytic ozonation, O3/H2O2, and EP processes mitigate bromate formation compared to ozonation.•The EP process offers an attractive alternative to O3/H2O2 and catalytic ozonation for water treatment.
