•Acid erosion causes surface changes in dentin.•Some NaF-containing materials are capable of preventing superficial dentin changes.•Materials showed increase in dentine inorganic content of Ca + and P-minerals.•Varnish containing 22600 ppm NaF showed dentin prevention from acid attack.•NaF + fTCP toothpaste showed dentin prevention from acid attack.
