•Estradiol differentially programmes some parameters of energy metabolism in male and female rats.•The blocking of ERα, ERβ and GPER from P5 to P13, but not from P1 to P5, alters energy metabolism in adult rats.•The lack of estradiol activity on ERα, ERβ and GPER from P5 to P13 decreases long-term POMC expression in female rats.•The lack of estradiol activity on ERα, ERβ and GPER from P5 to P13 decreases long-term body weight in male rats.
