Shape and size transformations of biomass particles during combustion

•Combustion of single particle of five different biomass fuels.•Thermal imaging camera was used during combustion.•Biomass char shape and aspect ratio was calculated during combustion.•During char combustion, particle shape changes from elongated (prolate) to spheroid (equant) are observed.
