•A software-based NVM write monitor in user space is developed to collect NVM writes.•Adaptive monitoring is designed to reduce time overhead while maintaining accuracy.•A swap-enabled transparent (SET) wear-leveling mechanism is proposed.•SET outperforms its no wear-leveling counterpart by 8.9x in write balance.
