Trade liberalization and haze pollution: Evidence from China

•We investigate the impacts of trade liberalization on haze pollution in this study.•The evolution of the relationship between trade liberalization and haze pollution is analyzed based on VAR model.•It is observed that trade liberalization has significantly reduced haze pollution with alternative econometric techniques.•The mediation effect method is employed to explore the impact channels.•Policy recommendations for haze management are proposed.
