•Novel copper(II) complexes of 3-(2-pyridyl)-1,2,4-triazole were prepared and well characterized.•Molar metal to ligand ratio affects the nuclearity of a polynuclear associate.•Complexes were determined using X-rays and spectroscopic techniques.•Magnetic properties reflect Cu-Cu antiferromagnetic interaction.
