•First time to have assessed humour comprehension in patients with multiple sclerosis.•62% of the relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis were impaired in humour identification.•We observed dissociations between verbal and visual stimuli.•Clinicians would have to adapt their language by expressing straightforwardly.
