Nonlinear sound absorption of ultralight hybrid-cored sandwich panels

•A nonlinear theoretical model is developed for the sound absorption of ultralight hybrid-cored sandwich panels.•A nonlinear finite element model is also established, whose results fit well with the developed theoretical model.•The structure has been theoretically and numerically demonstrated great sound absorption for noise with high sound pressure level.•The effects of key structure parameters on sound absorption are systematically explored.
