Covalent functionalization of graphene oxide with hyperbranched lanthanum phthalocyanines for improving optical limiting

•The axial covalent attachment of rare earth phthalocyanine to graphene was reported for the first time.•Hyperbranched phthalocyanines exhibit more superior optical limiting performance.•Photoinduced electron/energy transfer is more clearly reflected at 1064 nm laser.
