•WO3-Nb2O5 were prepared by sol-gel method to mix metal elements homogeneously.•These WO3-Nb2O5 catalytic systems were fully characterized.•Interaction between WO3 and Nb2O5 influences the physicochemical properties.•WO3-Nb2O5 displays high catalytic performance for monochlorobenzene combustion.•Cooperative catalytic effect exists in WO3-Nb2O5 catalyst system.
