•Pilot-scale recovery of ammonia from anaerobic digestate was demonstrated.•Operating parameters and strategy for the pilot recovery system were suggested.•The overall recovery efficiency of APs was estimated at 72%.•The recovered AP crystals were mainly composed of mono-ammonium phosphate (MAP).
